🎥 3 Easy Tips for More Profitable YouTube Advertising
1) Choose the right YouTube Ad format
There are many different ad formats available in the YouTube advertising suite. You can choose from bumper ads to sponsored cards to display ads. With all of the different ad formats, you have so much room for you creativity!
But where should you start? Well, you should first start by reading about each individual format on the YouTube help page here, and then tie that to the main goals of your video ad campaign
For example, if you’re looking to increase brand visibility & raise brand awareness with an engaging video ad, then it then we would advise to run a TrueView in-stream or discovery ad. However, if you’re looking to be generate leads with more targeted traffic to your website, it might make sense to run ads with sponsored cards.
Our advice would be to experiment with a few different ad formats with multi-variate test and optimize for ad performance. When you are setting up your ads, be sure to follow the specs outlined by YouTube to ensure the dimensions and quality match up. We advise that you take some time to do research on which ad format is best for your industry or product.
2) Be Sure to Segment In-Stream and Discovery Ads into Different Campaigns
If you were to run Google AdWords campaigns, you would separate your search vs. display network, right? Well you should! Ad placements are optimized for different behavior, and you should be making sure your are tailoring your campaigns accordingly. Why? In-stream ads and discovery ads (previously known as in-display ads) are very distinct from one another,
So you are asking what’s the difference? In-stream ads play before, during, or after other videos. Discovery ads appear next to related YouTube videos, as part of YouTube search results, or alongside other content across the Display Network.
With these differences it is important to have a different budget and strategy that you can control on the campaign level.
“These formats tend to perform very differently, so you’ll want to be able to evaluate performance and adjust the settings and bids differently for each format,” according to Alyssa Codd at Metric Theory.
3. Take Advantage of YouTube Targeting Options
What is the point of running ads if they are not targeted? If you were to run ads on Facebook, Twitter or Google you would need to set your targeting appropriately prior to starting the campaign - you will need to do the same with the YouTube targeting options. If you do not get your targeting correctly you will be wasting money on poor quality traffic that will not convert with your offers.
YouTube allows great flexibility to take control over who sees your ads. Starting with demographic targeting, you can then target affinity audiences (people interested in a certain topic), custom affinity audiences, and in-market audiences.
For example, if you’re selling piano lessons in a certain location it would make sense to advertise in that region to the demographic of your typical customers who are already interested in piano.
